Skype Mobiles Coming to Australia

Skype Phone3 Mobile together with Skype have launched a mobile phone that lets you make free Skype to Skype calls as well as make free Skype desktop to Skype mobile calls. They are calling the phone a “mobile internet phone with Skype built in” and it’s the next generation of mobile technology. It also allows you to make normal phone calls and access 3 content.

All in all I think this is a great idea and I suspect it will win 3 some new clients. Of course getting the free calls would rely on people being on Skype however think of the potential benefits for businesses and individuals. I think this is a smart move by 3 Mobile as by offering a little bit for free, they are sure to come out winning in the end.

I’m yet to understand if additional internet costs are charged through the mobile to use Skype to make the calls – it could be that phone calls are “free” but you pay for internet time/connection instead which could be a somewhat hidden cost. However it is also possible that internet time might be included in the monthly fee.

Either way, it is something to look out for and with that plus the iPhone due in Australia in the not too distant future it looks like our mobile technology will bring some new toys in the coming months!

Yes, if internet time is charged then the whole ‘free’ concept will be false.
Data charges on mobiles are high, and skype calls use on average 0.5mb per minute.
It could end up being very costly!
